How It Works

You type a question or research prompt and Perplexity runs live web searches in parallel, pulling from its web index and authoritative sources. Results are passed to the language model, which synthesizes a clear answer and appends inline citations from the original sources. Every claim links back to a specific source URL you can click through to verify. For Deep Research mode, Perplexity breaks your question into sub-queries, searches iteratively, evaluates retrieved information for consistency, and compiles a comprehensive cited report. You can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, and documents to analyze alongside web results. Conversation history is tracked within threads so follow-up questions build on prior context. Model Council (Feb 2026) lets Max subscribers send queries to multiple AI models simultaneously and compare responses side by side.
